Curriculum
All of the massage and other body work classes are taught with advanced knowledge on the proper body mechanics, posture, weight bearing, fulcrums, leverage and usage, to help the student give their best massage with more efficient use of their energy.
All courses are based on clock hours only, not units of instruction.
In all classes, students are not taught to diagnosis or prescribe particular diseases; instead they recommend general common sense health and life style improvements.
Classes may also be taken as distance learning classes, however please check with your state and city to see if their licensing requirements allow distance learning for the subjects you are interested in taking, if the reason you want to take the class is to obtain a license.
All classes are based on availability.

Click on the headings below to see course details.- Swedish massage: theory, practice and demonstration which include the five basic movements of Swedish and Massage. Effleurage, pétrissage, friction, fanning and kneading are explained in detail along with their applications and uses. Understanding the effects on the circulatory and nervous systems, lymphatic circulation, and muscle tone are emphasized. Many more Swedish massage methods and procedures are taught which will enable the student to have a much wider variety of techniques to choose from to tailor a massage routine for the individuality of the student as well as the client.
- Deep Tissue Swedish Massage: use of fingers, knuckles, hands, forearms, elbows and arms with proper body mechanics, posture, weight bearing, fulcrums and leverage to enable the student to give a very firm massage.
- Stone Swedish massage: use of stones held with hands, utilizing the Swedish massage techniques and routine, placement of stones on the client is also demonstrated.
- Deep Tissue Stone Swedish Massage: use of deep tissue techniques with stones to give a very firm stone Swedish massage; placement of stones on the client is also demonstrated.
- Shiatsu Massage: Japanese bodywork, which uses specific patterns of acupressure points with pressure techniques and patterns of stretching.
- Deep Tissue Shiatsu Massage: many methods of finger, knuckle, hand, forearm and elbow deep pressure on the Japanese acupressure points and patterns of stretching.
- Stone Shiatsu Massage: use of stones on the Japanese acupressure points and patterns of stretching.
- Deep Tissue Stone Shiatsu Massage: use of stones with deep pressure on the Japanese acupressure points and patterns of stretching.
- Sports Massage: training and preparation for sports events and recovery from exertion and injury during and after sporting events.
- Deep Tissue Sports Massage: use of strong pressure with the sports massage techniques. Stone Sports Massage: use of stones with the sports massage techniques.
- Deep Tissue Stone Sports Massage: use of strong pressure and stones with the sports massage techniques.
- Lymphatic Massage: the lymphatic system is an essential part of the detoxification and immune systems in the body; lymphatic massage aids the functioning of the lymphatic system.
- Acupressure: point location and many methods of application of pressure to specific Traditional Chinese Medicine acupressure points.
- Deep tissue Acupressure: many methods of finger, knuckle, hand, forearm and elbow deep pressure to the Chinese Medicine acupressure points.
- Reflexology: a system of massaging the body especially the feet, hands, ears, face and head, affecting other parts of the body due to nerve and energy connections. Sensitivity in spots in these areas may mean health problems in other body parts and by massaging those spots, health improvements may result in the other body parts.
- Deep Tissue Reflexology: use of strong pressure on the reflexology spots.
- Stone Reflexology: use of stones on the reflexology spots.
- Deep Tissue Stone Reflexology: use of strong pressure with stones on the reflexology spots.
- Pregnancy Massage: mostly a low pressure Swedish massage tailored to the special needs of pregnancy.
- Chair Massage: a bodywork session, a shiatsu type routine, combined with some Swedish and percussion movements done in a special chair in which the client sits forward with their face resting on the chair’s cushions, exposing the head, shoulders, neck and back.
- Deep Tissue Chair Massage: use of strong pressure during the chair massage and routine. Stone Chair Massage: use of stones during the chair massage and routine.
- Deep Tissue Stone Chair Massage: use of strong pressure with stones during the chair massage and routine.
- Holistic Massage: using a wide variety of massage techniques, each with their own individual indications and benefits for the optimum overall improvement of the patient.
- Thai Massage: a type bodywork routine developed in Thailand, which uses specific patterns of stretching, twisting, pulling and pushing.
- Lomi Lomi: a Hawaiian originated type of massage routine with many rhythmic flowing moves.
- Spa Treatments: rejuvenating, relaxation, therapeutic and beautification treatments, modalities including: Facial Massage, seaweed, herbal, salt, baking soda or mud scrubs and herbal wraps.
- Reiki: a method of attuning and transmitting healing energy.
- Cranial-Sacral Massage Therapy: a technique for finding and correcting muscle imbalances or blockages that may cause sensory, motor or intellectual dysfunction; practitioners do gentle work with muscles covering skull bones and the sacrum.
- Massage and other holistic DVD's: may be viewed at Alta Massage College for up to 10 percent of the class hours.
- Massage Office Procedures: how to operate the business portion of the massage practice. Ethics: legal, moral and ethical aspects of the massage practice.
- Nutrition: how diet relates to the massage practice.
- Holistic Studies: some of the most popular current bodywork and other holistic techniques.
- Stretching Techniques: a series of exercises and massage techniques that increase the ability of the tissues to lengthen, enabling joints to move through a greater range before meeting resistance from tension and muscle contraction thereby decreasing the chance of injury.
- Students learn the scientific language and concepts regarding the body's systems.
- This study includes lectures, observation and demonstrations.
- Upon completion, students should have a working knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the muscular, skeletal, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and endocrine and lymphatic systems.
- Indications and contraindications for massage pertaining to these systems are emphasized.
- Practical hands on experience in a health practice including ongoing supervision plus consultations answering all the questions that can arise in real massage plus business situations and student evaluation.
- The Massage Therapist training program prepares the students to be a professional therapeutic massage therapist; to be able to apply for a city license to open up their own therapeutic massage business.

- Internship may also be taken at no charge as separate classes in the following separate amounts of time: 50 hours, 100 hours, 200 hours, 300 hours and 500 hours or any combination of those hours.
- Practical hands on experience in a health practice, with ongoing supervision, consultations answering all the questions that can arise in real massage and massage business situations and student evaluation.
- The prerequisites for the Internship as separate classes at Alta Massage College includes a certificate of completion from at least a 100 hour massage class and passing the hands on Swedish massage test.

- Yoga Teacher Training: teaches the student how to teach yoga postures, movements, stretches, exercises and meditations that help balance, heal, strengthen and energize the body.
- Personal Trainer: teaches the student to make up individual exercise programs and guide others through their use.
- Naturopathy: many natural techniques for testing and healing the whole body and person.
- Medical/Physical Therapy/Chiropractic Assistant: how to assist in Medical, Physical Therapy and Chiropractic practices.
- Exercise Physiologist: Students learn the scientific language and concepts regarding the body's systems. This study includes lectures, observation and demonstrations. Upon completion, students should have a working knowledge of the physiology of the muscular, skeletal, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, endocrine and lymphatic systems. Indications and contraindications for exercise pertaining to these systems are emphasized.
- Medical Coding and Billing: use of the computer, and phone while utilizing special software and accounting procedures, to request and procure payment and post the payments to the computer, for medical, massage and other holistic health practices.

- Anti-Aging Consultant: students are taught how to treat and council patients on how to slow down the aging process
- Chinese Tongue Analysis: a method of checking the tongue to detect weakness in the body.
- Qi Gong: how to utilize Chinese developed movements that produce energy to help heal clients.
- Positive Visualization: scientifically proven methods of using mind imagery to improve health and success.
- Reiki: a method of attuning and transmitting healing energy.
- Flower Remedies: flower essences intended to improve emotional problems.
- Ear Candling/Coning: how to use a lit long hollow tube shaped candle, usually made of linen and wax, to increase circulation in the ear.
- Polarity: using gentle touch and rocking motions and specific energy work to balance the body’s electromagnetic energy.
- Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP): methods of teaching people how to change limiting and damaging patterns of language, thought and actions.
- Spa Treatments: rejuvenating, relaxation, therapeutic and beautification treatments, modalities including: Facial Massage, seaweed, herbal, salt, baking soda or mud scrubs and herbal wraps.
- Meditation: helping balance mind, body and spirit through mental techniques.
- Neuromuscular Massage Therapist: relieves congested spots in muscle tissue that can radiate pain to other parts of the body.
- Myofacial Release Massage Therapist: utilizes pressure points on fascia as a means of decreasing pain, increasing function and reducing pressure on structures.
- Applied Kinesiology: a technique used to gain diagnostic information through muscle testing, while strengthening muscles to aid in structural correction. Muscles are related to specific organs or systems through the acupuncture meridian network.
- Herbology: teaches herbal terminology and information especially as it relates to the holistic health field and massage with emphasis on the 30 most commonly utilized herbal remedies. Training is given in how to find the best individual and combination herbal remedies for patients/clients including therapeutic, detoxifying, rejuvenating, maintenance and enhancing herbs.
- Magnetic Therapy: using magnets in many different forms to speed the healing process.
- Computer Operations: how to utilize the computer and special software programs for the practical application of office processes.
- Practice Building: how to establish a massage practice through the filing of a corporation, creating a business plan; so you can submit an application to a lending institution to help fund your new business venture.
- Advanced Esthetician: instruction and demonstration on use of Age Defense Protocol, Relaxation Protocol, Skin Analysis, Proper Treatment Recommendations, Deep Pore Cleansing and Extraction, the difference between men and women’s Facial Massage, Lymphatic Drainage Massage, Oxygen Treatments, proper use of microdermabrasion machine, plus, rules and regulations for proper disinfection of all tools used.
- Weight Loss Management: students learn how to council clients on nutrition, exercise, herbs and other healthy lifestyle changes to lose weight.
- Juicing: instruction on juices or combinations of juices that are indicated for relieving specific symptoms.
- Nutritional Chelation Therapy: specific individualized nutritional programs that help detoxify and decrease fat in the body.
- Smoking Cessation: students learn how to help clients stop smoking with the use of nutrition, herbs and other lifestyle changes.
- Trigger Point Therapy: trigger points are tender areas in muscle tissue, which frequently radiate pain to other areas. When the trigger point is treated, the pain is very often decreased or eliminated. Trigger point therapy is similar to acupressure; however trigger points are based on western scientific anatomy and physiology.
- Physical Therapy Aid practice and demonstration: modalities, physiological effects, indications, contraindications, mechanisms of injury, stages of healing and repair.
Medical and Holistic Health Terminology: the technical or special names used in the medical and holistic health fields. Office Procedures: a series of steps and a number of methods of accomplishing office activities. Patient Charting: how to help doctors’ document patient treatments. Holistic Studies. 34 hours. - Anatomy: Emphasis will be placed on the indications and contraindications for physical therapy with respect to the muscular, skeletal, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and endocrine and lymphatic systems. 33 hours.
- Health Clinic Training Internship: back-Office Procedures: use of physical therapy modalities and massage under the direction of a doctor or physical therapist. 33 hours.
- General Nutrition: nutritional terminology and information especially as it relates to the holistic health field with emphasis on vitamins, minerals, nutrients, amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, specific foods, diets, packaged food label reading, the four basic food groups, and the food pyramid.
- Weight Loss Management: students learn how to council clients on nutrition, exercise, herbs and other healthy lifestyles to lose weight.
- Juicing: juices or combinations of juices that are indicated for specific symptoms.

- General Homeopathy: how to take a detailed symptom survey and case history and how to find the appropriate Homeopathic symptomatic and constitutional remedies. Homeopathic terminology and information especially as it relates to the holistic health field and massage with in-depth information on the most commonly utilized homeopathic remedies.
- Holistic Studies. 67 hours.
- Internship: clinical training in how to find specific homeopathic remedies for patients including therapeutic, constitutional, maintenance and enhancing remedies. 33 hours.
- Advanced Herbology: generally recognized benefits and toxicities of the most commonly utilized herbs that are grown in America, China and India.
- Homeopathy: how to find the most beneficial homeopathic remedies.
- Stress Management: many techniques will be presented on how to find and eliminate or decrease the causes of stress including how to decrease the effect that stress has on the human body.
- Iridology: analysis of the iris of the eye to detect the body’s genetic and acquired weaknesses.
- Holistic Health Studies: students are taught the most common causes of health problems, such as unhealthy foods, mental, physical and emotional stress; trauma, clogged arteries, vitamin mineral nutrient and/or amino acid deficiencies, pinched nerves, poisons, lack of exercise and lack of rest or sleep and how to help people eliminate or decrease these causes. Students are also taught the most common things which help to eliminate health problems such as healthy delicious diets, stress management, toxin recognition and avoidance, massage, physical therapy, specific exercises and proper resting and sleeping habits and while empowering other people utilized these techniques. 67 hours.
- Internship in Holistic Clinical Practice: clinical training in how to holistically treat, counsel and find specific holistic remedies for patients. 33 hours.
- Advanced: Massage, Herbology, Homeopathy, Nutrition and Physical Therapy Aid including: How these fields relate to: stress, air pollution, water pollution and food pollution. Naturopathy: many natural techniques for testing and healing the whole person.
- Aroma therapy: utilization of essential oils to improve mental and physical conditions.
- Fasting: the details on elements of fasting, what to look for and why.
- Detoxification Procedures: like most things, if you do it, incorrectly it can hurt you, but if you do it correctly it can help you. Students are taught what to do and what not to do in the utilization of saunas, steam baths, Jacuzzis, hot baths, wrapping up in blankets, putting on layers of clothes and detoxification exercising.
- Clinical Nutrition: clinical training in how to make specific advanced holistic health programs for patients including therapeutic, special maintenance and enhancing health programs.
